George Maronidis, Managing Partner, gave speech on combined transport procedures and relevant institutional framework at the Greek – Turkish chamber of northern Greece Conference, held at the Professional Chamber of Thessaloniki with topic “Easier – safer & less expensive (more profitable) co- operation between Greece and Turkey within the context of combined transport”.
The purpose of the event was to strengthen the public debate on the Formulation of the Strategic Development Framework 2014-2020 policy in the transport sector and specific objective was to enter into dialogue cooperation between Greece and Turkey in combined transport, so that the two countries may effectively join the International and Trans-European Networks.
George Maronidis explained the legal concept and nature of combined transport with reference to multimodal transport document and pointed out that combined transport applies only basically to container transport under Greek law. He also gave emphasis to the fact that there is no specific legal framework governing the combined transport contract and the liability of the carrier at both national and international level. He also explained the main reasons for the absence of a legal framework and he suggested that carrier’s liability issues should be regulated, either by law applicable to unimodal transport contract at the place where damage took place, or should be regulated uniformly irrespective of the place where the damage occurred and irrespective of the mode of transport.
